Dear McAuley Families
Bula! Thank you to our Leadership Team and staff for allowing me the time to be away with my family to celebrate my 60th birthday. It has been quite a festival of surprises, celebrations, and special time. Thanks to all who sent on their best wishes and thoughts, I appreciate that very much. I’m living by this quote I found that says “Embrace the beauty of 60, where the wisdom of age meets the spirit of youth!”
Congratulations to our Class of XXIV who have navigated HSC trials very capably. Our young men and women continue to impress and inspire me with their dedication and optimism. Staff are busy planning their end of year events with much excitement and joy. Year 11 (The Class of XXV!) are now preparing for their course exams which then lead them to begin their Year 12 studies in term 4. They too are rising to the expectations set for them and are working well as a team, supporting one another to do their best.
It's been great to see the Primary Building Project take off so smoothly. Demolition should happen quickly during the next week or two. I am so grateful for the hard work of the primary staff and the cooperation of our students to make the best of the restrictions (noise) and changes that have had to take place. I am hearing many excited reports from budding construction workers who describe vividly the action and machinery that is taking place!
Over the coming weeks we begin the process of budgeting, planning and staffing for 2025. I am already aware of a number of staff intending to retire and we hope to begin recruiting early for teaching and leadership positions for next year. Please keep an eye on local news and websites and encourage friends and family to consider joining our fantastic college staff.
The Tell Them From Me Survey closes today. Thanks to those that took the time to respond. The points raised and answers given form an important part of our Strategic and Annual planning processes. This week we began the important work of Master Planning for resources, buildings and capital works on the Secondary Campus which projects the growth and needs of the College for the next decade.
Growth and change are always difficult, and I admire very much those members of our community who can embrace our vision and move optimistically forward. We are facing a new world of learning and teaching and working with a changing population. At the same time, we cannot shy away from our high expectations in terms of academic and pastoral care.
Our school motto “Believe, Strive, Achieve” set out for us the foundation which will continue to move the College forward. If nothing else Dolly Parton’s words are a focus… “If you want a rainbow, you gotta put up with some rain…”
Mary our mother look after us.
Eamonn Moore
Principal
We were fortunate enough last Friday to have Archbishop Christopher Prowse, the Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, visit our College. His Grace was given a tour of both campuses before enjoying morning tea with our staff. This was a significant occasion for our College community and a rare privilege to welcome the Archbishop to our campus. Students and staff were grateful for the opportunity and for his time spent visiting us.
TERM 3 SCHOOL FEES ARE NOW DUE
Monthly fee statements are emailed to families each month. Please only use your BPAY details to make payments. Your BPAY reference details are on your monthly statement. If you require assistance with planning your payments, please email the office: office.mcauley@cg.catholic.edu.au
This week was Book Week with the theme 'Reading is Magic'. Yesterday, Kindergarten to Year 6 were invited to dress up as their favourite magical book character for the day. For the first time, we held our parade in the College Hall which was a great success. Students and staff all participated and their creativity was inspiring!
Little Possums students came to visit our kinder classroom today and share in some fun activities. We read 'Click, Clack Moo' by Doreen Cronin and created a cut and paste chicken and some finger puppets. There were blocks, boards, shapes and playdough for us to share with our new friends. Thanks for joining us today, we look forward to meeting these children again later in the year.
Year 2 are learning about physical change in their Science classes. Last week they explored elasticity with lolly snakes. They learnt a lot, and the students were very happy when the time came to eat their experiments at the end of the lesson.
This term, Year 5/6 are reading the novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman which is set in Poland. They have been discussing origins and heritage within their families and have discovered Alex of 5/6 Blue has Polish heritage. Alex shared her family heirloom of a traditional Polish folk costume that features a delicate linear bead embroidery with chain stitch applications. Thank you for sharing a part of your family history with us Alex!
Students in Year 5/6 Blue have been having a great time in Mathematics. They measure the perimeter of shapes and then calculate the costings to fence their area.
Last week, our Elective Art class went to the Tumut Library to decorate the windows for book week. The theme is 'Reading is Magic'! Thanks to our great students for working quickly and creating some magic on the windows. Pop down and have a look! Also a reminder that we still have some McAuley artworks on display in the foyer of the library.
This week, our Elective Art class have been investigating portraits, especially the sculptures of Beijing Ah Xian. They then created their own clay bust and designed a face. After they dry students will bisque fire them and decorate them.
For his Design & Technology Project, Year 11 student, Rahn has created this stunning Japanese inspired tray. Fabulous work Rahn, well done!
Yesterday, students from Years 9, 10 and 11 attended the Try a Trade Day Expo in Wagga. The Expo was an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their expertise, engage with students, and inspire the next generation of skilled employees. What a great opportunity for our keen students as they consider their next steps.
Year 9 and 10 PASS (Physical Activity & Sports Studies) students are currently doing a golf unit at The Tumut Golf Club. They are having lessons from Mr Geoff Brain who is a community instructor. Students are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to try a new sport. Thanks to Geoff and The Golf Club for all their support.
Stage 4 have been continuing their Olympics with students playing 3 x 3 basketball and Rugby 7s. Pictured are students proudly representing Italy and USA with signs they have created. As always, students are showing great sportsmanship and enthusiasm in each of the sports.
TRENT BARRETT LEGENDS GALA DAY
McAuley students had a fantastic day at the Trent Barrett Legends Gala Day last Thursday. Thanks to Play Rugby League South West NSW for organising such a great event.
MCAULEY COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY
We are looking into investing in new shade gazebos, that would be used for sports carnivals and other such events (similar to those pictured). We ask for expressions of interest from local businesses or families for donations of any amount to assist us in purchasing. Please contact us at office.mcauley@cg.catholic.edu.au so we can begin discussing this opportunity further.
Students are loving all the activity on the Primary campus with the big digger in operation. They spent their recess watching on and chanting "rip it out" in encouragement!
From 1 August all students are required to wear a McAuley hat to be outside. Please ensure hats are clearly labelled before your child brings them to school. Wendellie's is able to embroider the name on at the time of purchasing if needed. We are unable to give students a hat to "borrow" from lost property when they cant find their own.
CANCER COUNCIL SUNSCREEEN TIPS
What is the best sunscreen?
The best sunscreen is one that you will use. We recommend sunscreen that is SPF50 or SPF50+, broad-spectrum and water-resistant, applied correctly and reapplied every two hours.
We also recommend you use a cream or lotion sunscreen as they provide a more reliable way of ensuring adequate coverage. We don’t recommend using aerosol sunscreens, but if you choose to, keep in mind that they may not provide a good level of protection.
Sunscreen for babies and children
Babies and children are at particular risk of sunburn and skin damage because of their delicate skin. Exposure to UV radiation during the first 15 years of life greatly increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.
Cancer Council recommends protecting babies and children’s skin with physical barriers such as wraps, clothing, hats and using shade as much as possible. If your baby or child is going to be exposed to the sun, apply sunscreen to those small areas of skin not covered by wraps, clothing and a hat.
Sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months due to their sensitive skin. Always usage test any product first on a small area of your baby or child’s skin for any negative reactions and apply sunscreen to those areas of exposed skin that can’t be covered with hats and clothing.
Older children can be encouraged to apply their own sunscreen with supervision.
Sun protection measures are recommended when the UV is 3 or higher. To ensure your skin is protected from UV, use all five forms of sun protection.
You can download the free SunSmart Global UV app to check on you UV forecasts based on your location.
