Principal's Report

Dear McAuley Families
We begin the process of interviews for enrolments for 2026 this week. At the close of enrolments last week, we had strong interest in all areas of the college and are looking at offering places in Kindergarten and Year 7, 2026. I am always proud to hear of the good reputation for academics and pastoral care that the college has earned in the local community.
As the college now levels out in terms of population and classes, we are conscious as a leadership team to build consistency across all areas of the curriculum. This is particularly important in terms of our behavioural expectations and processes. One area of mention is our Phone Policy Statement of Practice. Let me be clear that Secondary students are directed to place phones in classroom pockets or to leave them in their bags. This also includes ear buds or watches. Students are not to use phones or devices during recess or lunch, or before or after school.
Repeated breaches and failure to comply with a teacher direction will result in the student being directed to take the phone to the office and collected at the end of the day. Parents will be contacted in this regard and are expected to support the processes of the college.
Each year students and families are encouraged to agree to the Catholic Education student acceptable devices, applications and networks policy. This outlines the responsibilities of all parties involved. Our aim is to model and encourage acceptable use and balance the need for communication with a focus on safety, education and wellbeing.
In signing that agreement parents undertake several responsibilities including being “…responsible for supervising student use of digital devices and applications, and internet use while the student is at home…”
We all want to model the safe and appropriate use of social media, and I encourage families to take advantage of the information and advice provided through the website of the e-safety commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au). The webinars and regular newsletter are very valuable. The three key strategies outlined are a great model for families to follow at home.
- Be engaged open and supportive. Reassure your child they can always come to you no matter what. If things are happening online that worry them then talk with them about it.
- Set some rules. Consider a tech family agreement with time limits, rules and consequences.
- Use safety settings and features. Use parental controls. Know what apps your children are using and be aware of their activity on social media.
As parents and educators, we have a role to play in helping our boys and girls navigate the world. These resources are a great support. Please reach out if there is anything I can do to assist your family.
Mary our mother, look after us.
