A Contemporary Take on Romeo & Juliet
Last week, our Year 9 English students were fortunate to attend a live performance of Romeo & Juliet, presented by the talented team from Mashed Theatre. This innovative production offered a fresh and engaging perspective on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, skilfully blending insightful literary analysis with dynamic live theatre.
The story followed Chloe and Dave, two students working against the clock on a group assignment. Their challenge: to examine and argue the relevance of Romeo & Juliet in today's world. As the two grappled with differing viewpoints, they delved into key scenes from the play—bringing to life Shakespeare’s themes of love, conflict, and fate, and exploring how these ideas still resonate with modern audiences.
This creative adaptation not only entertained but also deepened students' appreciation for Shakespeare’s work. The accompanying Q&A session provided valuable opportunities for discussion and reflection, enriching students’ understanding as they begin their Shakespeare unit this term.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mashed Theatre for their fantastic performance and their commitment to bringing quality educational theatre to rural and regional schools. It was a memorable and inspiring experience for all.
